Neveh Shalom Wins Arts Award

The Solomon Schechter Awards Judgins Committee of the United Synagogue of America has awarded Congregation Neveh Shalom first place in its Judaica and Fine Arts category. The award will be presented at teh United Synagogue Biennial Convention, November 5-9, in Toronto, Canada. Congregation President Arnold Cogan and immediate past president Mark Ail will represent Neveh Shalom at the Convention.

Co-chairs of the Renovation and Beautification Committees, Leah Nepom and Shirley Nudelman, submitted Neveh Shalom's entry for this award. Their presentation focused on the recent renovation of the Sanctuary, particularly the glass Ark doors created by nationally renoown designer Ed Carpenter and the new Torah mantles designed by award-winning artist Sara Harwin. Also featured were the foyer display cases that currently showcase memoribilia from the congregation's 120-year history.

Neveh Shalom's renovation project was four years in the planning. Phase II, which includes exterior work and remodeling of the social hall begins this fall. In addition to Nepom and Nudelman Committee members who have worked long hours to fashion the renovation include Gary Pearlman, Cookie Yeon, Inga Hamburger, Milt Hasson, Jerri Roth, Elinor Freohlich and Carol Koranda.
